Diversity Essay Sample - Should College Students Write About Polygamy?
Diversity Essay Sample - Should College Students Write About Polygamy? If you have taken the time to write a sample of a diversity essay for college, then it is my belief that you have demonstrated the need for colleges to give students an opportunity to apply for and be accepted into their school. While I am all for giving a wide range of people the chance to go to college, I have noticed that many colleges seem to do this by requiring you to write about a topic that is over three hundred years old. We have all heard of abolition, women's rights, suffrage, etc. However, there are certain topics that I believe should never be dealt with by someone who wishes to go to college. These topics are:The Polygamous Families: Ever heard of polygamy? Not many people think that polygamous families are an issue that is being overlooked. I am here to tell you that not only are polygamous families over looked but they are actually suppressed by the authorities. Of course there are cultural explanati ons as to why the government in some states make it illegal for a person to live together more than two or three times but that is all that is there. With that being said, there have been over 100 cases of additional marriage partners being discovered within the last ten years. While some of these cases may be prosecuted, the majority will be allowed to go on due to religious reasons. The Choice: We all have to take a position when we decide to raise a family. Some of us may raise children that look like us while others have the option to have children that look different. Whatever the case may be, to make it an issue for college admissions, would only serve to hurt the people involved.Marriage: There are those who will marry for financial gain, those who just want the freedom and choices that come with a relationship that they cannot have or those who will raise children that do not have their own viewpoints. For the most part these people will be allowed to be in college and the onl y difference will be that they will not have to write an essay about it. It is unfortunate that people can separate one aspect of themselves from the next.Race: Just as with many other issues, I find that there are many who may choose to choose a minority group because they feel that they are better than everyone else. This could be the case or it could be that they simply choose to see the world a different way. We as a society have the right to do that and colleges have the right to screen those that we are allowing into our institution. You can rest assured that I will continue to teach my students to write a diversity essay. While they do not need to write about a topic that is over three hundred years old, I would still like them to write something of value. Whether or not you write about polygamy, race, immigration, choice, economics, etc.
